History
After the Union occupation – in the US Civil War – of Jackson, Mississippi the Confederate forces retreated toward Vicksburg.
Lieutenant General John C Pemberton – commanding the Confederate forces – was ordered to turn back and engage Major General Ulysses – commanding the pursing Union forces – at Champion Hill.
The Confederate forces were defeated although they kept their retreat route open. The battle was so violent and bloody even General Grant would write later of the distressing scenes of the battle and his wish to alleviate the suffering of the enemy.
Grant even criticized his commander for being so harsh and not taking more prisoners.
This battle led directly to the Siege of Vicksburg.
4,000 acres of the battlefield was put aside in 1971 for conservation and was given a National Landmark designation in 1977. Between 2003 and 2023 the National Battlefield Trust acquired another 1,222 acres through easements and land purchases.
Paranormal Activity
A young man clad in a grey uniform with a thick blonde moustache and long hair has been seen through the grounds of the battlefield. He is often called the “Ghost of Champion Hill”.
Apparitions of both Union and Confederate soldiers are seen throughout the area often in large groups still fighting the battle.
The phantom sounds of battle are frequently heard all over the former battlefield.
Other Reported Activity: disembodied voices and yells; time slips; unexplained mists; touches, tugs and pulls by unseen presences; cold spots and temperature changes; electrical disturbances; light anomalies and feelings of not being alone and being watched.
While a well known paranormal show did discover evil in this location we have found no other investigators who encountered this phenomenon.
