Status: Former Residence; Former Civil War Hospital; Hotel
History
This building was originally built between 1840 and 1852 by John Alexander Klein for his wife, Elizabeth.
The Kleins – as many other families at the time – suffered a number of family tragedies. Two infants died shortly after birth, their son was killed on the back stairs when a gun he dropped fired accidentally and their daughter died on the second floor from natural causes (presumedly from an illness).
There was probably a suicide by a female previous to 1919 as well.
During the US Civil War the house was used as a Union hospital with uncountable soldiers passing away in it’s walls.
In 1960 the home was bought by the Vicksburg Theater Company saving it from demolishment.
In 1981 it was converted into a bed & breakfast and has had multiple owners since and an unscheduled closure in 2020.
It is now owned by a family related to the original Klein family.
Paranormal Activity
The apparition of Elizabeth Klein – walking both up and down – is seen on the front stairs. She seems happy and is thought to be a residual haunting still going on with life.
In the Gentleman’s Parlor phantom pipe smoke is reported. This thought to be from John Klein and many people believe this phenomena is directly related to John not approving of certain people in his home.
An apparition of a little girl – thought to be the daughter that died in the second floor bedroom whose grave was moved in 1919 – is seen and heard on the stairs to the second floor. She is described and looking sad and lost.
Phantom footsteps are often heard on the back stairs and thought to be the son killed in a gun accident.
Yet again on the stairs, which seem to be the most active areas in the hotel, is the apparition of a lady thought to be the suicide victim. She is also seen in the ballroom and throughout the rest of the building.
The apparitions of Civil War soldiers are also seen throughout the hotel and on the grounds.
Other reported activity: phantom sounds of babies crying and children giggling; disembodied voices and feelings of being watched and not being alone.
