CARIBOU HOTEL

Dawson Charlie Street

Status: Historical Haunted Hotel; Open Seasonally

History

The building that would become the Caribou Hotel was built in Bennett in 1898. In 1901 it floated on a barge down Lake Bennett to Carcross and its current location.

The hotel has had many owners in the last 100+ years including Dawson Charlie himself and Edwin and Bessie Gideon who originally rented it from Dawson’s estate. The building burned to the ground on Christmas Eve of 1909 and the Gideons rebuilt it.

Edwin passed in 1925 but Bessie continued to run the hotel until her passing in 1933. Although, most would say Bessie never left the Caribou; even after death.

The hotel was closed and boarded up in 2005 – after its owner was murdered in 2004 - but in 2006 it was bought and renovated. It was reopened in 2019 as a boutique hotel and restaurant saving one of Yukon’s most historical buildings.

Paranormal Activity

The ghost of Bessie is often seen in the third floor window watching the street below. She is also said to bang on the floorboards from time to time.

Bessie is said to be quite shy and is described as being neither friendly nor unfriendly.

DAWSON CITY

PALACE GRAND THEATRE

255 King Street

(867) 993-7200

Status: Former Theatre; Heritage Property

History

As the 19th century came to a close Dawson City was known as the “Paris of the North” during the Klondike gold rush. It was a hard life, and the stakes were quickly bought up leaving many with nothing but a bag of broken dreams.

Opening in July of 1899 and built by Arizona Charlie Meadows who was a wild west showman who moved to the Yukon during the Klondike gold rush this theatre was the crown jewel.

It was designed to be both a dance hall as well as a European style opera house.

The building standing today is not the same one that was built at the turn of the century. The current one is an exact replica – built in 1962 – and standing on the same sport as the original.

It also has adopted the ghosts and paranormal activity present in the original structure.

Paranormal Activity

The most famous ghost on site is definitely a female spirit but beyond that not everyone agrees. Some people think its Klondike Kate who was a famous showgirl from back in the days. Others say it’s the wife of Arizona Charlie Meadows herself who had her thumb shot off by her own husband while she was on stage.

The apparition of a woman with red hair is seen sitting in the second floor balconies watching the empty theatre.

The apparition of a woman in a black period dress has been seen sitting on the boardwalk outside of the theatre.

Phantom footsteps are often heard stamping along the hallways on the upper floor. Many believe these footsteps belong to the ghost of Arizona Charlie himself.

People report the strong feeling of a presence of someone on the third floor. A feeling that is usually accompanied with the scent of roses; others have said rosewater.

Other Reported Activity: electrical disturbances including lights turning on and off on their own and a feeling of being watched especially when someone is alone.

WHITEHORSE

WHITEHORSE CADET TRAINING CENTRE

(Boyle Barracks)

Booth Road

Directions

History

This is the only permanent cadet camp north of 60 in Canada. The program was started in 1973 but was not moved to this location until 1983 when the Department of National Defense took over the unused Wolf Creek Juvenile Corrections Centre from the Territorial Government.

Paranormal Activity

It is said that an inmate from the facility's days as a prison hung himself in Barracks B2.

Late at night in this barracks ghostly cries are heard.

Testimonial From BB

I lived there when it was a Juvenile Detention Center, before it became a cadet camp. I cannot spot where the building was (did they tear it down?) in your photo, but let me tell you, there's all kinds of bad spirits there. We used to hold seances (both in the library and in the laundry room) and had sh*t happen that freaked the hell out of all of us.
