History
This 60 kilometer (37 mile) highway was built between 1974 and 1979 – opened to traffic in 1977 – was built over a single lane trunk road. It passes through the Titiwangsa Range (Banjaran Besar) which forms the backbone of the Malayan Peninsula.
In 1997 the highway was upgraded to 6 lanes from Kuala Lumpur to the Genting Highlands exit and 4 lanes for the rest of the way. The expressway also includes Malaysia’s first highway tunnel – the 900 meter Genting Sempah Tunnel - which was doubled in size during the upgrade.
There have been numerous fatal accidents on the highway dating back to when it was a single lane track. The worst accident was on January 28, 1990 when a Riot Police van collided with a tanker truck, a passenger bus and 10 cars resulting in the deaths of 17 people at kilometer 32.5 near the tunnel.
The expressway is run as a toll road by ANIH Berhad who manage it for the Malaysian Government.
Paranormal Activity
The most famous ghost on the highway is that of a driverless yellow VW Beetle. The Beetle is only seen on the highway after dark.
It has been described as becoming very aggressive toward cars it has taken a “liking” to and has been said to try to force other cars off the road – many people believe the ghost haunting the car is looking to kill other drivers (perhaps for friends or maybe just for spite).
At other times the Beetle will appear out of the darkness in front of you and begin to slow down forcing you to overtake it. Once it has disappeared in your rear-view mirror it will appear again in the darkness in front of you and begin to slow down again. Drivers have played this cat and mouse game with it for tens of kilometers.
The next most common occurrence of an unexplained incident along the highway feels like more of an Urban Legend then anything else; that being said I’m not expert on the creatures living in the Malayan jungle.
The origin story is of a couple whose car broke down on the side of the highway and husband got out to try to fix it. The wife fell asleep and was woken up to a banging on the car roof. At this opportune moment a police car showed up and shined their spotlight on the car.
The wife was instructed to get out of the car and walk to the police without looking back. Of course, her curiosity got the best of her and she eventually looked back. On the roof of the car was a creature in the process of eating her husband and the banging was her head hitting the car and it took bites out of him.
The creature fled into the night.
Sounds rather like the couple who drove home and found the hook from the car attached to the driver’s door. That being said, and as we have said repeatedly on this website, there is always some truth in every Urban Legend.
The ghost of a schoolboy in uniform is seen along the side of the highway looking lost and forlorn. Legend says he was killed in a car accident and spends eternity looking for his mother. Apparently she was ejected from the car in the accident leaving their souls forever separated.
At the site of the multi-fatality accident in 1990 – kilometer 32.5 - the past events are said to play out before witnesses on the anniversary of the event; January 28.
Other Activity: phantom hitchhikers; apparitions appearing in the back seat of people’s car – they disappear just mysteriously; accident victims standing on the side of the highway sometimes pointing to where they died; light anomalies; phantom headlights; phantom sounds of car accidents and people calling for help; phantom screams and unexplained mists.
There also numerous reports of people suddenly appearing on the road including some sitting in the middle of a lane.

History
Built in the 1930’s by the British this military garrison was perfectly situated high on a hill with a stunning 320-degree view of the ocean around the island and the Straits of Malacca. An absolutely perfect position to repel any sea invasion from the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II.
Unfortunately, when the Japanese came in 1942 it was through the jungle. The installation fell quickly and the Japanese turned it into a prisoner of war overflowing with atrocities. Without going into any details, the following took place here on a daily basis: murder; torture; rape; bayoneting people; guillotining people; beheadings; firing squads and the list goes on. The true horror is that as terrible as your imagination can get it still won’t be bad enough.
Worst of all the British forces had mostly abandoned the base by the time the Japanese got there not seeing it as of any real strategic value. They were more concerned with Singapore to the south where the made the exact same fatal mistake in assuming the Japanese would attack from the sea. They invaded from the jungle again and Singapore fell.
The horrors were subjected to soldiers and civilians – men, women and children.
The Japanese did not leave until the Emperor forced the government to surrender after the atomic bombings.
For almost 60 years the fortress remained abandoned only remembered that it was the place where so many horrible things happened. Only a few urban explorers and adventurers even dared penetrate the base and the tunnels beneath it. And they came back with horror stories of their own of ghosts and paranormal activity so frightening that leaving the site abandoned was the only solution.
In the late 1990’s Johari Shafie founded the Penang War Museum and with help from the Penang government began an extensive renovation of the site to bring it back to the way it was as a British fortress.
In 2002 the museum – the largest of it’s kind in Southeast Asia – was opened to the public.
Paranormal Activity
On multiple sites this location consistently makes the Top 10 Lists of Most Haunted Asia.
The biggest issue with the site its now listed as both “Dark Tourism” and “Ghost Tourism” meaning it now has a reputation and the ghosts are under pressure to preform. Much the same as the reality TV Paranormal Investigation Shows the site must present a certain level of paranormal entertainment.
The pressure to perform can become a need to present the paranormal and the only way this can be done reliably is to – well, quite simply – fake it.
I do not believe this location does that; having never been there I cannot even venture an educated opinion and Our Paranormal World does not deal in alt-facts. I just want to present both sides of the argument.
The most common paranormal activity reported here is the sounds of gut-wrenching phantom screams both in the constructed base itself and on the large grounds.
Apparitions of headless people and people with nooses hanging around their necks are frequently seen here. As with other sites where terrible atrocities occurred a powerful sense of evil pervades the entire site – in some cases this has forced people to leave and caused some to become violently ill. A few have been reduced to tears and/or hysterics when they approach the site.
Other Reported Activity: apparitions of former Japanese soldiers some of whom have attempted to attack the living; shadow figures; disembodied voices; light anomalies and feelings of being watched.
History
The first phase of this park was opened in 1970 with the construction of 24 hotels – this was intended to be a major tourist attraction – 5 chalets and a swimming pool.
Eventually the park contained water slides, a lake, a dinosaur/prehistoric park and a giant maze. And everything went like a dream for almost 20 years making the owners – assumingly – very wealthy.
In 1993 the dream ended. A 27-year-old man from Singapore was killed on the giant slide shocking both the public and the government. The park was temporarily closed while the accident was investigated resulting in the park making changes to the slide the man had died on.
The park was re-opened but a landslide tore into the very same pool the man had died in pouring muddy water into the pristine water. The park closed that part of the park to the public in hopes of doing repairs.
Then the lawsuits – including ones from government agencies – led to the park being shut down in 1994.
People still enter the park to this day as the jungle buries the ruins. The dinosaur park is especially interesting to visit as the animals were constructed by concrete and life sized and look even better as their buried in the jungle.
However, some report ghosts and other paranormal activity haunt the park.
Paranormal Activity
In 2020 a horror movie called Mimaland was filmed on site and ran into several incidents of the real paranormal variety including – mass hysteria suddenly appearing in 7 crew members, feelings of being watched, unexplained equipment failures and sudden unexplained movement in the surrounding jungle.
It is believed that there were more “accidents” in the park that were quickly paid off and buried. This had led to the theory that dark spirits (demonic) have been attracted to the park and roam the grounds still long after the closure. People have seen shadow figures moving in the abandoned buildings and the jungle taking over the site.
There are other reports of hysteria among visitors to the abandoned park which many claim are a result of possession of evil spirits.
Other Activity: disembodied voices and whispers; lingering mist-like touches by unseen entities; cold spots; objects moving on their own; time slips back to when the park was operating; light anomalies and feelings of being watched and not being alone.

I was looking for photos of haunted buildings and came upon a photo of this site. I'm not sure how to explain it but it just screamed out to me to write an article. The amount of energy pouring from these buildings is truly terrifying. The ghosts here do not rest easily.
History
The Highland Towers were originally a block of three apartment buildings built between 1975 and 1983 consisting of 12 storeys each. They became famous as the place where rich men hid away their mistresses.
People began to report cracks in the road to Block 1 as early as November 1993. Water has been flowing past the block since October of the previous year from burst pipes on the hillside above the complex and the hillside had been stripped of all vegetation by another construction project built on the very top. No investigation was launched into the cracks which continued to widen and hill above was reported as almost liquid it was so full of water.
On December 10, 1993 the area was hit by a massive rainstorm. At 1:35pm December 11 the hillside released under enormous pressure and slammed into Block 1 with the pressure of 200 Boeing 747 jets. Block 1 was torn off its foundations and completely collapsed.
The official death tool is 48 but many people believe it may have been as high as 55 as not all of bodies were recovered after the disaster. Only 3 people were pulled from the wreckage (one would later die in the hospital).
The complex was quickly declared unsafe and abandoned and the two remaining towers still stand today empty on the skyline (see photo above).
Paranormal Activity
The apparitions of the former residents of Block 1 are seen still wandering the grounds.
Disembodied voices and screams are heard echoing through the abandoned complex.
There are also stories of people asking for rides or hailing cabs and asking to be brought to the Towers - they simply cease to exist once the Towers are reached. In one particularly chilling story a woman hailed a cab and asked to brought to the former complex. When the cab reached the Towers he turned to find the woman gone and a bag of blood left behind on the seat.
In one of the more unique things I’ve come across while researching haunted locations apparently people come to this site to pray for luck when playing the lottery.
